Joomla! 1.6 User Manual
Welcome!
This is a work in progress in parallel with the continuing development of Joomla! 1.6
It is a community wiki and you are free to contribute. Please add where you can and correct what you see to be wrong. All help gratefully received and acknowledged.
Introduction
No. It is not too soon to present the Joomla! 1.6 User Manual.
This manual exists now so that
- Those who are planning to migrate to Joomla! 1.6 when it is released can plan with confidence.
- Those who are working on the development path of Joomla! 1.6 can contribute their experience. The Manual will be available and authoritative as Joomla! 1.6 is released.
- Those who are working with Joomla! 1.5 will be able to see how they can benefit from and build upon the work they have already done.
Present Situation
Joomla! 1.6 is in the alpha release phase and released the second version on 25 October 2009. The development is proceeding very quickly and you can read about this release and the development status. The beta phase will begin very shortly.
Migration Status
- A very large part of the functionality you are used to in Joomla! 1.5 will be found and be familiar to you in Joomla! 1.6
- A migration tool will be available to move your database from Joomla! 1.5 to Joomla! 1.6.
- This manual will contain tips and techniques in text and video particularly covering the new features of Joomla! 1.6
Who is this Manual for?
The Joomla! community contains the widest possible range of skills from the total beginner to the most expert technical person. We aim to cater for all but the most expert user. This will be achieved by having parallel pages for different levels of expertise with extensive cross referencing between them. And, at all levels, we will have links to short video demonstrations of how things will work.
Getting Started - while we develop
Please explore and dive in. Contribute where you can.
At the moment we are just building the hierarchy so there may be gaps where you would like to go. They will be fixed by 5 November.

- For help with MediaWiki. MediaWiki is the engine which drives this wiki and this help is, as you might expect, extensive.
If you can tell us how to do anything better, we are keen to learn.
Getting Started - with Joomla! 1.6
- I am keen to get started with Joomla! 1.6 for my new project. Whoa! Hold your horses! At the moment, Joomla! 1.6 is still being tested. If you would like to help follow the download link in this forum post.
- I am keen to understand how Joomla! 1.6 will affect my work with Joomla! 1.5
- I am not sure if I should stay with Joomla! 1.5 or not.
For both the above please be reassured that Joomla! 1.6 is going to make your life more straightforward. There may be - as there always is with new things - some pain of acclimatisation but the whole of the Joomla! community is committed to making Joomla! an easier, more powerful, more useful CMS with a wider range of applications.
