Joomla! 1.6 User Manual

Note: This is an attempt to suggest a TOC for the documentation of Joomla! 1.6 It is heavily predicated upon the idea that there will be strong backward compatibility with 1.5. Perhaps different levels of documentation should exist for different levels of user skill and/or experience. That concept is not reflected here. Please discuss the structure and suggest changes.

What is required to run Joomla?

A web server that supports php as either a module or as a cgi script Apaches httpd is the most tested and officially supported. Lighttpd, Nginx, and IIS are know to work, SEF instructions are specific to Apache httpd, but Lighttpd and Nginx can be configured to perform the same from a users perspective.

PHP version 5.2.x or 5.3.x mod_php is the most common and you will find the most support for any problems you have, many Joomla administrators advocate using a fast-cgi server on high traffic sites.

MySQL 4.0 or greater some third party extension require MySQL 5.0 or greater. The vast majority of testing has been done with the default MyISAM storage engine, but some extensions may require other MySQL storage engines, innoDB is required by CiviCRM.

The server need configured such that the joomla user can upload files to various directories.
