Column Headers[edit]

In the table with all sections from your Joomla! site displayed, you will see different columns. Here you can read what they mean and what is displayed in each column.

Checkbox: You can select this box to select a category. You will need to do this for several actions, for example editing and deleting.

Title: The title of the category. When you click on this title, you will go to the edit page of this category. You can find the help screen about this part of the Category Manager here: Screen.categories.edit.15.

Published: Whether the category is published or unpublished. A green hook is shown when the category is published, a red cross sign when the category is unpublished. Click on the icon to toggle between published and unpublished.

Order: The order of the categories. This order is used when a Section Blog Layout is defined with Category Order of "Order". You can change this order in two different ways. One is to change one or more numbers in the Order field and then click on the Save Order icon in the column header. Another is to click on the small green triangles to move the current row up or down one position.

Access Level: The access level of the category. It will display the word Public (everyone can see it), Registered (all logged-in users can see it) or Special (every one with a higher group then 'Registered' can see it). Click on it to toggle between the different access levels.

Section: The section to which the category belongs to. When you click on the title, you will go to the edit screen of this section.

# Active: The number of active articles within this category. The active articles include the published and unplished articles, but not the trashed ones.

# Trash: The number of trashed articles from this category. These articles can be found at the Article Trash. You can restore or delete them there.

ID: The ID number of the category. You can not change this number.

Version Changes[edit]

The differences between the Joomla! 1.0.x Category Manager and the Joomla! 1.5 Category Manager are mostly about the sorting of the categories. In the Joomla! 1.0.x versions you were not able to click on the column headers to sort the categories by the specific column, ascending or descending. In Joomla! 1.5 there is only a Title, while there was a Category Name and a Title in Joomla! 1.0.x. In Joomla! 1.5 you are able to set the Alias, used for SEF, in Joomla! 1.0.x this option was not available.

Typical Usage[edit]

You will use the Category Manager when you want to do some actions with your category database. Here you will find some of the reasons for the use of this screen.

  • You want to search for particular categories, or sort your categories in a specific way.
  • You want to edit existing categories, for example there title, state or image.
  • You want to create a new category.
  • You want to see how many active and trashed articles a particular category contains.

Quick Tips[edit]

  • Click on the title of a category to edit this category.
  • Click on the title of a section to edit this section.
  • Click on the green hook or red cross in the Published column to toggle between the states Published and Unpublished.
  • Click on the Column Headers to sort the sections by that column, ascending or descending.

Points to Watch[edit]

  • You need to select one or more categories when you want to publish or unpublish the categories.
  • You need to select one or more categories when you want to copy or move the categories.
  • You need to select one or more categories when you want to delete the categories.
  • You need to select one or more categories when you want to edit the categories.
  • The sorting and filtering options overrule each other.

Dependencies[edit]

When you change the state of a category, this category will not be displayed in a Category Blog Layout or a Category List Layout. When you create a new category, you can choose this category when creating a new article.

More dependencies about editing the categories can be found here Screen.categories.edit.15#Dependencies.
