To take a Joomla! site temporarily offline:
Log in to administration
Click on "Global Configuration"
Where it says "site offline" change the radio button from "no" to "yes"
You may change the offline message
The site has now been replaced by a page with: the Joomla logo; your message; a log-in for registered users
