J3.x:Getting Started with Joomla!/Introduction to Joomla Articles
Article Pages in Joomla
Articles in Joomla are your website's Content pages. Articles can be linked to the Joomla menu system, or you can create hyper-links to other articles within the article content itself.
User Access for Creating Articles
You need specific access to create new content. The minimum access required is Author. The other applicable user access levels are:
- Super User
Joomla also gives you the ability to edit articles from the Frontend of your site as well as the Backend.
Create Article - Administrator Area
To start a new article simply click Administrator → Articles → Add New Article. You can also use the option in the left menu in the main Administrator control panel screen, under Content - New Article.
The Articles: New page opens and you can begin entering your article's data. At the top of the page is a row of buttons. Below that is a data entry form.
You should see Save, Save & Close, Save & New, Cancel, and Help buttons. Let's take a quick look at what each button does.
The Save button saves the data you have entered to the database and keeps the Article: Edit page open so you can continue working. When you click it, the page will reload and you should the Article saved message. Joomla leaves the Article: Edit page open so you can continue editing. Use this button to save your work as you put your article together.
- The Save & Close button saves the data you have entered to the database, then returns you to the Articles page.
- The Save & New button saves the data you have entered, closes the current article and loads the Articles: New page.
- The Cancel button returns you to the Articles page without saving your data. Any changes you made since your last Save will be lost.
- The Help button opens the Content Article Manager Edit help screen.
You will be presented with a content editor, depending on what you have selected as the default editor, e.g. TinyMCE or JCE.
In the editor's screen you can start typing the content for your article. The tool bar contains many options including those for formatting text, bullet lists and inserting images and other media.
Depending on the editor you use, it may look like this:
Type in the editor and add your formatting and other content as you see fit.
Click Save to save the article. You might see a Save & Close button which will return to the Article Manager list.
