Description[edit]

You can extend your Joomla! based website functions installing different type of extensions (addons). The Installer is a useful tool for installing the extensions in one place fast and correctly. The addons can be installed from your local machine (intallation package), from an install directory of the your website or from an URL given by you. Also with this tool you can uninstall every type of extension

Version Changes[edit]

In Joomla! 1.0 the components, modules, mambots (called as plugins in Joomla! 1.5), templates and languages could be installed separately via their appropriate screens from the menu items of the Installers menu.

It's much more simple by now in Joomla! 1.5 as the installer got smarter because it can detect the extension type and continue the installation process.

It was not possible to install a remote file from the specified URL.

In Joomla! 1.0.x the available extensions were listed on their installation screens. In Joomla! 1.5 it was changed to a multi-tabbed interface, providing an easier and simplier solution for managing your installed extensions.

Column Headers[edit]

Column Headers Placeholder

Enter details of any specific Column Headers definitions that are unique to this function alone. Do not include this section if not applicable. There is no need to go into major detail in this section unless it is appropriate to do so. Use your judgement or discuss with other team members. Use definition term (dt) and style (dt15) for the name of the Column Header and definition description (dd) and style (dd15) for the explanation of the term.

Typical Usage[edit]

The Installer can be opened from Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu item. You can choose the mode of the installation. The mode used most frequently is the Upload Package File.

Upload Package File

In the upload field named Package file you can specify the package of the extension to install. This is generally a zip, rar type file. You can browse your local machine and search for the package to upload with Browse... button. After you found the package on your local machine, select it in the Upload File window and click on the Open button, so the specified package with path appears in the Package file field. Click on the Upload File & Install button! Joomla! uploads the package and autimatically install it and you can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction!

Install from Directory

Decompress the package in a temporary directory of your local machine and decompress the compressed package into it, then with FTP you can upload the files and directories of the package into a directory on the server. Then in the Install Directory field specify the directory where you have uploaded the fles and directories of the package. After it click ont the Install button and Joomla! autimatically install it and you can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction!

Quick Tips[edit]

Have another think if you want to uninstall one of Joomla addon. For example sometimes it is good idea to unpublish the modules you don't want to show on frontend. Generally the embedded Joomla modules cannot be reinstalled without a hitch.

Points to Watch[edit]

Some Core or System addons (Component, Module, Plugin) cannot be uninstalled. This ones cannot be selected for uninstalling. Also the Default Template and Language are disabled for selecting.

Important: Do not delete the Default Template and Languege files using FTP because it issues in error both front-end and back-end!

When you want to install a 3rd party developed module or plugin which belongs to a component, please keep in mind that you cannot use it unless you install the related component.

When you uninstall a 3rd party developed component having its own module(s) or plugin(s), these modules cannot be used anymore, so please uninstall them as well.

Some components coded by 3rd party developers may have their own modules and/or plugins included in the installer, so make sure the module/plugin directories are writable otherwise the extension will not work properly.

SECURITY WARNING: Please use only those 3rd party extensions on your site which you really need. Do not use your live site for testing purposes because it may compromise your site and server.

Please do not install Joomla! extensions downloaded from warez sites because they may be infected by a virus or malware that cause damage on the server and can contaminate the computer of your visitors! Installing from remote URL can be dangerous as well.

Dependencies[edit]

Dependencies Placeholder

Describe other screens that rely on the presence of this function or that this function relies upon, in order to work correctly for example: a Category depends upon the presence of a Section (up) and it must be in place before a Categorised Article (down) can be created. If there are no Dependencies either up or down for the particular screen just state None but do include the section. Use paragraph format type and do not add extra white space. Ensure that you use the correct styles for inline emphasis and notices. It will probably be sufficient to just list these and provide links to the Help Screens relating to the dependency.
