The "J1.5" namespace is an archived namespace. This page contains information for a Joomla! version which is no longer supported. It exists only as a historical reference, it will not be improved and its content may be incomplete and/or contain broken links.

This is a 'hands-on' tutorial which shows how to create a new article.

Readership and what you need to have done already[edit]

  • Everyone
  • You have access to a Joomla! site
  • You are logged in with a user name with an appropriate level of permission
  • You know where the new article will be located

Introduction[edit]

You can easily start a new article for yourself - you need:-

  • a suitable login
  • to know where the article will go.

The difference between authors and publishers[edit]

  • Authors can create and alter articles but they cannot 'publish' them - which means that they do not display until the system adminstrator has ticked a box for them to be published.
  • Publishers can see the Publish tick-box when they edit or create an article - so they can publish their own articles.
  • Publishers can edit documents that they did not create - so in many ways a site is safer with fewer publishers - but it is often convenient for people to be able to 'publish' what they create.

Starting a new article[edit]

There are two ways to do this:-

Either -

Use the USER MENU

Beneath the LOGIN menu, there is a separate menu of items of potential use to people creating articles.

Click on Create an article

Or

At the bottom of most of the group detail pages there is a small icon that looks like a sheet of paper - new (This icon does not appear on the News pages or on pages with just one article - it does appear on pages where there is a list of articles.)

Click on the New Article icon ( image new)

The editing screen (called Submit an Article) is loaded. This allows you to add content and publish the article to the web site. It is the same editor as used for editing articles.

Type in a title in the title box
Type in some text - or copy text from another document

Do start simple - text plus headers - maybe bullet points - are enough to start with. Get something in and saved - then try other layouts.

Get it in the right menu[edit]

Note that you can do this before you have added all the text.

screen of the Publishing section

There is a Publishing section below the editing screen. Here you must:-

  • Choose a Section for the article -
  • Choose a Category -
  • Choose Yes to make sure it is Published
  • Choose the right Access level (Registered means that it can be seen by people who have logged in but do not have any write access.)

If the article is going to be displayed in one of the pages that lists content - getting the Section and Category correct means that it will display in the right place without further effort on your part.

Save the article

You should now find the article in the place you expect!

Note for authors[edit]

The difference between authors and publishers is that authors can create and alter articles but they cannot 'publish' them If you are an Author - your new article will not display on the website until it is published.

To get it published depends on the way the site is managed. Publishing is normally done by the site adminstrator or someone else with publish permissions. You are likely to need to send an email asking for it to be published.
