Image uploads are enabled on Joomla Documentation for users with more than 3 edits. You can only upload certain types of images to this website, they are image only image extensions such as, *.png, *.jpeg, *.gif.

Uploading an image to Joomla Documentation not only uploads the image for display within a page, but creates a special image page which contains additional information about the image. In short, by uploading a image a few things happen.

  • You add image to the server's image folder (the location is automated) for use on a page.
  • You automatically create a image page containing more detailed image information. This information includes the image's actual location, image type and size in pixels, along other pertinent image information.

Uploading a file[edit]

Method 1[edit]

This method describes the basic uploading of an image on Joomla Documentation. Remember, all uploaded images must be compatible with the Joomla Electronic Documentation License. Images not compatible will be deleted immediately. Formulating a good image name is difficult, for recommendations please read Image naming guidelines for some suggestions.

  1. Prepare the file for upload. Make sure the file is exactly as you want it.
  2. In the drop down menu "gear icon" top right, click “Upload file.”

  3. Click “Browse” next to the “Source filename:” to locate the file on your computer (the name of the “browse” button depends on your web browser).
  4. Change the “Destination filename:” to something descriptive(if necessary).
  5. Fill in the “Summary”, if necessary. Usually this would be extra information about the file such as screenshot, custom graphic, annotated screenshot, or additional information(a link to original file showing full license).
  6. Set the license from the drop down of choices, the Joomla Electronic Documentation License should be used for most uploads.
  7. Click the “Upload file” button.

If it is a large file, you may need to wait several seconds for the upload to complete. After the upload is completed, you will be taken to the file's page.

Method 2 (Suggested)[edit]

The following method makes it easier to track image file names used in a page. You set the image names in a page first, then upload them by clicking on the file name red-links within the page. This assures your image is uploaded with the exact name needed to display properly on the page you are editing.

  1. Insert a file (image) link into the page you are editing. E.g. [[File:Image_name.png]] or [[Image:Image_name.png]]. The use of File: and Image: is interchangeable and you may use either prefix.
  2. Save the page and find the red-link for File:Image_name.png on the page. If you are controlling the image size, you will see the red-link as a image px size, e.g. 700px.
  3. Click the red-link and follow the instructions of Method 1 from step 3 on. NOTE - Using Method 2 of uploading will pre-fill the “Destination filename:” with the name of the image. This is useful as you will not loose track of images being used on the page you are editing.

After your upload completes, you will be taken to the file's page. At the bottom of the page you will see the page your file is used on. You can click the page's name you are editing and see your recently uploaded image is now displayed on the page. You may continue to upload more images by clicking other red-links within the page, returning to the page after each upload completes.

Using images and file description pages[edit]

Using Image: vs File: to place an image

The use of [[File:My_image.png]] or [[Image:My_image.png]] is a matter of preference. You may use either one as they have the same meaning.

After you've uploaded a file, you can use it in an article, with some special wiki syntax to create the link. See Help:Images.

As stated above, your file (image) gets its very own “file description page” within the File namespace of the wiki. You can edit this page to provide more information about the file. For example, many public wiki projects are quite sensitive to copyright issues, and so you should explain where you got the file from, and what its copyright status is, on the description page. Any other useful descriptive notes could also be added there or in the “Summary” before uploading the file.

List of files in the wiki[edit]

There are a number of special pages to help you view and manage files which have been uploaded. Go to “Special pages” (in the tools under the “gears icon” top right ) and then see...
