Joomla! Getting Started Manual[edit]

This page introduces documentation to help you to get started with Joomla!

Note: This is a draft just now - and is being actively edited

Who is the Manual intended for[edit]

The articles here are aimed at helping people who have not used Joomla! before. The good news is that the pages in a Joomla! web site can be created, edited and managed without using any code and the site itself can be managed without previous experience of looking after web servers. At the same time, there is scope for experienced developers to extend a site in sophisticated ways. There are indications of the intended audience at the head of each article.

The groups that are particularly targeted are the following:-

Note: - Words needed for each level that are meaningful + some more detail so that readers recognise
themselves. Clearly - each group has different needs and some can be let loose on the other docs on the site
- eg the Admin manual
  • Beginner: someone with no previous experience of adding content to a web site but has some basic email and editing skills.
  • Someone with limited computing background, but has added to a static web site but not using HTML or CSS.
  • Someone with previous experience with managing a static web site, has used HTML or a scripting language, but not a lot of background knowledge.
  • Someone who has used a CMS previously and has some need to maintain a Joomla! site.
  • Someone with programming experience and is technically aware - a potential developer in Joomla!

About Joomla![edit]

I wonder if this is needed. A short bit about dynamic web sites - then link to more here about Joomla!

Joomla! is a Content Management System - known as a CMS. The purpose of a CMS web site is to allow content pages to be more easily managed than is possible for a traditional, static web site. So Joomla! sites allow visitors to engage actively with the content of the site and most sites allow some contributors to add and edit the content. A Joomla! web site is dynamic in the sense that the management of the content is separated from the appearance of the site and consists of three parts:-

  • It uses a database in the background to store all the content, as well as the menus and and many of the features that you see on the site.
  • A template controls the appearance of the site and thus what is seen on the screen, which normally means that the whole site has the same general layut and appearance.
  • The CMS system brings these elements together when there is a visitor to a page and transforms the material stored in the database into a web page displayed on the screen.

In addition, there are other built-in features:-

  • Menus for navigation
  • A system for managing visitors (usually called users)
  • A system for managing articles
  • Joomla! can be extended by the addition of third-party extensions. These are outside the scope of this Manual - but are listed elsewhere. (ref Joomla! Extensions Directory - JED)
Read more about Joomla! - link to a good description somewhere perhaps - I don't want readers distracted.
