Before Upgrading[edit]

How to upgrade a Joomla! 1.5 website to Joomla! 1.6 without loss of data and similar disasters?

There are two variants[edit]

  • you can update the existing Joomla! 1.5 web site by the help of an additional component. This component loads all the necessary files by one click to your Joomla! 1.5 web site and converts it automatically to Joomla! 1.6
  • To create an empty Joomla! 1.6 website and insert the data of the Joomla! 1.5 Web sites manually

Should I Migrate my Site?[edit]

Usually you want, because it's the shiny new version! Joomla! 1.6 presents many new features and functions for Joomla! users, but is Joomla! 1.6 for you? Before moving your site to 1.6, review the following points to make sure the process goes as seamless as possible.

  • Have you installed Joomla before? Basic Joomla! skills and experience is advised.
  • Do you need ACL or nested categories?
  • Are all extensions you use 1.6 compatible?
  • Is your template ready for Joomla! 1.6?
  • Are you able to adjust your site’s code if needed?

If you answered no to those questions, Joomla! 1.6 might not be for you. Remember, Joomla! 1.5 will still be supported (up to the beginning of 2012 and may be longer), so your existing site will still receive regular security updates without having to upgrade.

System Requirements[edit]

Before upgrading to Joomla! 1.6 from Joomla! 1.5, please review the System requirements needed for Joomla! 1.6 to run.

Microsoft IIS: v7[edit]

  • PHP v5.2.4 +
  • MySQL v5.1

Backing up Your Existing 1.5 Site[edit]

Instructions on how to backup a database using PhpMyAdmin (common on most web hosts). Alternatively, there are several backup extensions for Joomla 1.5 you could look into: Akeeba Backup (formerly JoomlaPack) for a full backup of your site or SQL Dumper that can be used for both creating and restoring Joomla databases.

Check Your Extensions[edit]

Joomla! 1.5 extensions WILL NOT work in Joomla! 1.6 by default. Be sure to check that all your 3rd party Joomla! extensions, plugins, templates, components, and modules are available for Joomla! 1.6 to prevent any loss of functionality in your new site. Joomla! 1.6 Compatible Extensions ( this is a list of extension submitted to the JED and listed as 1.6 compatible) always check with the extension developer for the most updated files.

Check Your Template[edit]

Joomla! 1.6 has a new template structure, existing 1.5 templates will NOT work in Joomla1 1.6. Please check with your template vendor for updated Joomla! 1.6 templates.

Methods for Upgrading[edit]

  • Upgrade an existing site using the jUpgrade migration script
  • Install Joomla 1.6 and move the 1.5 data manually (using FTP and phpmyadmin)

Language Files[edit]

If you use Joomla! in another language than English you have to install correct language files.
