I had added some notes to http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Upgrade_Joomla_1.5_Template_to_Joomla_1.6 some time ago. That page needs revising, as some of it is inaccurate, but might contain some worth info.
It might be nice to encourage use of method="upgrade" with the templates too.
