There are many articles and tutorials which focus on component development. If this is your first time developing a component for Joomla! First, you will want to work through the tutorial, Developing a Model-View-Controller Component 
. To help with visualising the control flow of a component you should look at the diagrams found on the page, Component Program Flow.
