Преди да започнете е добре да знаете коя версия на Joomla! ползвате. Това е важно особено ако ще правите смяна между дългосрочните версии(от 1.5 на 2.5 и т.н). Ако сте объркан или не знаете какво е дългосрочна версия е добре да прочете заизданията и поддръжката на Joomla CMS версиите. Joomla! версиите се правят по следния начин: [major].[minor].[maintenance]. Като пример: версия 3.1.5 е Joomla! дългосрочна версия 3, с малка версия 1 и релийз по поддръжката 5.
Since version 1.7, the updating and upgrading of Joomla is built into the administration interface as a component. The terms updating and upgrading might be used interchangeably. In many ways, updating and upgrading are alike since Joomla 1.7, but you will need to pay very close attention to the details. To help define them better, it is recommended you use the term migration which would be defined as a major.minor (2.5) to a different major.minor (3.1) version.
Simple Updating
Updates are an easy path to the next maintenance release and are backwards compatible, for example, version 2.5.13 to version 2.5.14. For Joomla CMS 3, these updates span all minor and maintenance releases. Some examples are version 3.1.2 to 3.3.6 and 3.3.1 to 3.3.6. Please see the specific pages to review version from and to.

You must upgrade to Version 1.7 first if you are on version of 1.6 below the maintenance release of 1.6.5.
